Secca: The Artisan Collective from Kanazawa, Creating “The Future of Tradition” for the World

 

Based in the creative city of Kanazawa, Secca is an artisan collective (Kōgei Shūdan) that advocates for “the creation of a future tradition.”

Since its establishment in 2013, the collective has profoundly and boldly advanced the concept of monozukuri (Japanese craftsmanship/making) in Japan.

What Secca pursues is an attitude that respects tradition while placing importance on the continuous evolution of Kōgei (Japanese craft).

They question conventional wisdom and existing notions, interpreting traditional techniques and inherited philosophies in their own unique way.

現在、HASSIN -時と工芸のダイアローグ- でご覧いただけるのは、

 

 

明治神宮鎮座100年を祝した杜芸術祝祭「気韻生動」で発表された、立体作品〈A↔︎UN〉です。

 

 

明治神宮の宝物殿にて、日本の伝統的な守護の象徴である「狛犬」をモチーフに出展されたものです。

 

 

 

 

Currently on view at HASSIN — a dialogue between time and craft — is the three-dimensional artwork 〈A↔︎UN〉 (A-Un).

This piece was unveiled at the Jingu-no-Mori Arts Festival, “Kiin Seido” (Vibrant Resonance), held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Meiji Jingu Shrine.

It was exhibited at the Meiji Jingu Museum (Homotsuden), featuring the “Komainu” (guardian lion-dogs), a traditional symbol of protection in Japan, as its central motif.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

この作品の造形の根幹をなすのは、その極めて精緻な構造です。

 

 

一体およそ15,000ピースに及ぶ微細なパーツが、立体パズルのように緻密に組み上げられることによって

 

 

複雑でありながらも躍動感あふれる有機的なフォルムが構成されています。

 

 

使用されているのは、自然の木を模して作られた人工の擬木です。

 

 

これは、作品発表の場となった明治神宮の杜のシンボルである「木」を題材としつつ

 

 

伝統的な木彫とは一線を画す、デジタル技術を介した現代の解釈を提示しています。

 

 

伝統技法とデジタルテクノロジーを融合させ、

 

 

神宮の杜という、厳かな空間で発表されたSeccaの「巧藝」をぜひ間近でご体感ください。

 

 

 

 

The foundation of this piece’s form lies in its extremely intricate structure.

An organic form, both complex and dynamic, is constructed by assembling approximately 15,000 tiny pieces meticulously, much like a three-dimensional puzzle.

The material used is artificial imitation wood, crafted to emulate natural wood. This choice addresses the theme of the “tree”—a symbol of the Meiji Jingu Shrine’s forest, where the work was unveiled—while presenting a modern interpretation, distinct from traditional wood carving, achieved through digital technology.
