【竹の革新者】四代田辺竹雲斎　伝統と挑戦が交差する「共生」のアート

田辺竹雲斎（たなべちくうんさい）氏は、1973年大阪府生まれ。

東京藝術大学彫刻科を卒業後、伝統的な竹工芸の継承者となりながらも、現代アートの領域で革新を続ける竹芸家です。

彼は、巨大な竹のインスタレーションを世界各地で展開し、素材の90%を再利用するサステナブルなアートを実践。

さらに、建築家とのコラボレーションによるテクノロジーと手仕事の融合など、「伝統とは挑戦なり」という格言を体現した活動を続けています。

その作品は、大英博物館やメトロポリタン美術館など、世界の主要な美術館に恒久的な文化資産として収蔵され、国境を越えて称賛されています。

Tanabe Chikuunsai IV (born in Osaka Prefecture in 1973) is a bamboo artist who, after graduating from the Sculpture Department at Tokyo University of the Arts, became a successor to traditional bamboo craftsmanship while constantly pursuing innovation in the field of contemporary art.

He creates massive bamboo installations around the world, practicing sustainable art by reusing approximately 90% of the material.

Furthermore, he embodies the maxim, “Tradition is a challenge,” through activities such as the fusion of technology and handcraft in collaborations with architects.

「共生」：伝統技法が語る竹と土の調和

竹と土の融合作品「共生（きょうせい）」は、まさに素材が互いに支え合い、共存する関係性を体現しています。

竹は土壌に根を張り、栄養を得て成長する一方、その根が土壌を固定し、浸食を防ぎながら土壌を保護します。

竹と土は、相互に影響を与え合いながら存在し、その調和で成り立っているのです。

“Kyōsei” (Coexistence): Traditional Technique and the Harmony of Bamboo and Earth

The fusion pieces in the “Kyōsei” (Coexistence) series embody the relationship between the two materials, where they truly support and coexist with one another.

Bamboo roots itself in the soil, gaining nourishment for growth, while its roots simultaneously anchor the soil, preventing erosion and protecting the earth.

Bamboo and earth exist by mutually influencing each other, and their being is founded upon this harmony.

このシリーズでは、「竹小舞（たけこまい）」と呼ばれる、現在失われつつある伝統的な日本の建築技法が使用されています。

これは、土壁の下地として竹を格子状に編んだ構造に土を塗り重ねる技法です。

田辺竹雲斎氏は、過去の遺産である伝統技術を単に守るに留まらず、それを現代の技術、思想、そして国際的な舞台へと大胆に再構築することで、

竹工芸が持つ芸術としての普遍的な価値と未来を世界に提示し続けています。

In this series, Tanabe utilizes “Takekomaï” (bamboo wattle), a traditional Japanese architectural technique that is currently disappearing.

This technique involves weaving bamboo into a latticed structure, which serves as a base onto which earth is layered to create a durable earthen wall.

Tanabe Chikuunsai IV does not merely preserve this cultural legacy of traditional techniques; he boldly reconstructs it by connecting it with contemporary technology, philosophy, and the international stage.

By doing so, he continues to demonstrate the universal artistic value and future of bamboo craft to the world.
