「招き猫」をアップデートせよ！《NEO MANEKINEKO》の挑戦

 

“Updating the Maneki-Neko! The Challenge of 《NEO MANEKINEKO》”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

古賀氏が、ごく身近な日本の伝統的造形に鋭いメスを入れたのは、《NEO MANEKINEKO》です。

 

 

この制作は、ニューヨークで、とある場所に「招き猫」が置かれているのを目撃した事がきっかけでした。

 

 

その存在感に着目し、古賀氏は「招き猫」の持つ役割を継承しつつも、現代的な視点とコンセプトでアップデートすることを試みました。

 

 

作品のフォルムは、「福寿」の文字が書かれた小判を首輪に下げ、右手を挙げるという、招き猫の典型的な姿をベースにしています。

 

 

しかし、古賀氏の手にかかると、その背景に立ち込める激しい炎の表現によって、もはや単なる招き猫というよりも、「不動明王」を思わせる力強い神々しさを放ちます。

 

 

この炎の表現は写実的ではなく、縄文時代の火焔式土器や日本の伝統的な絵画のように、あえて様式化されているのが特徴です。

 

 

また、金や白銀の着彩も、水墨画のような荒々しい筆致を残しており、日本美術の力強い表現が意識されています。

 

 

これらは、招き猫の神的な存在感を高めると同時に、闘争心や反骨精神を作品に注入したものと解釈できます。

 

 

そして、作品を彩る金や銀といった色彩には、豪華な釉薬が惜しみなく使われています。

 

 

これは、「わびさび」（簡素さ、静けさ、不完全な美）に対し、豪華絢爛な「ハレ」の美をもって対峙するという、古賀氏が掲げる「反わびさび」の精神そのものです。

 

 

モノの存在感を極限まで高め、見る者の五感を揺さぶる彼の美学が、この釉薬の輝きに凝縮されています。

 

 

 

 

Koga sharply focused on a familiar, traditional Japanese form and applied a radical approach in 《NEEO MANEKINEKO》.

This project was initially sparked by his surprise at seeing Maneki-Neko (beckoning cats) displayed in shops in New York, even in establishments with no connection to Japan. Focusing on the cat’s powerful presence, Koga sought to inherit its traditional role while attempting to update it with a contemporary perspective and concept.

The work’s form is based on the Maneki-Neko‘s typical appearance: a raised right paw, which traditionally beckons good fortune and money, and a collar holding a coin inscribed with the characters “Fukuju” (fortune and longevity).

However, in Koga’s hands, the fierce flames standing behind the cat imbue the work with a powerful divinity—reminiscent of Fudō Myō-ō (the Immovable Wisdom King)—rather than a mere charming cat figure.

The flame expression is not realistic but is deliberately stylized, evoking Jōmon-period Flaming Pottery (Kaen-shiki Doki) and traditional Japanese painting. Furthermore, the application of gold and silver features rough brushwork, much like sumi-e (ink painting), indicating a conscious commitment to the powerful expression of Japanese art throughout the piece.

These expressions both elevate the Maneki-Neko‘s divine presence and can be interpreted as injecting the fighting spirit and rebellious attitude of those who strive to succeed in the world.

Moreover, the gold and silver colors used to adorn the work utilize lavish glazes without reserve. This represents Koga’s philosophy of “Anti-Wabi-Sabi”: a deliberate confrontation of Sen no Rikyū’s aesthetic of wabi-sabi (simplicity, tranquility, and incomplete beauty) with the opulent beauty of hare (the extraordinary, celebratory, and conspicuous).

The extravagantly encrusted diamond on the right eye symbolizes wealth, success, and unwavering value. Meanwhile, the studs covering the left side act as tough armor for navigating contemporary society.

Adorned with the “wealth” of diamonds and the “strength” of studs, this Maneki-Neko transcends a mere symbol of good fortune. It is, quite simply, the “Ultimate Maneki-Neko,” inspiring an aggressive posture—the drive to seize success through sheer force of will.
